Here are our top maintenance tips to keep your Rupp Power Rigger™ system running at its best:
1. Rinse and Lubricate Cylinder Sleeves
After each offshore trip, rinse the inner sleeves of the hydraulic cylinders with fresh water—especially after heavy salt exposure.
We recommend applying SuperLube, Rupp Alumaguard® or a similar marine-grade aluminum lubricant to the inner sleeve of the cylinder several times a year, this will help prevent corrosion and binding to the inner sleeve of the hydraulic cylinder. The majority of cylinder related issues are completely avoidable and are a result of neglecting these basic steps.
Pro Tip: Make sure the cylinders are fully extended during rinsing and lubrication so the sleeve is fully exposed.
2. Inspect Hydraulic Fluid Level Regularly
Hydraulic fluid plays a crucial role in the performance of your system.
Check levels monthly or before extended use. The reservoir should be approximately half full, more importantly you need to be aware of any "loss" of fluid, which could indicate a leak somewhere in the system or hose connections.
Use a high-quality, mid-weight hydraulic fluid with (we recommend AW32):
-
Rust and oxidation inhibitors
-
Compatibility with Buna-N seals
-
A pour point below the coldest expected temperature
Pro Tip: Avoid overfilling—it can prevent proper return flow, cause sloshing of fluid through the vented cap and create excess reservoir tank pressure.
3. Check for Leaks and Loose Fittings
Hydraulic systems are subject to vibration, especially in mobile applications like sportfishing vessels.
Perform a semi-annual inspection of:
-
All hose connections (at the power unit, through-hull fittings, and manifold)
-
Cylinder ports
-
Check that the Bypass valve is tight (black knob on manifold)
Snug-up any loose fittings (do not over tighten) and replace any showing signs of wear or weeping fluid.
Important: Never use Teflon tape on hydraulic fittings—loose strands can clog valves and damage internal components.
4. Inspect Electrical Connections and Rocker Switches
Check for moisture intrusion and corrosion at electrical connection at least once a year:
-
Remove and inspect the back of each rocker switch assembly
-
Look for signs of moisture, green corrosion, or brittle wires
-
Replace switches if any corrosion or damage is found
Also check Deutsch connectors (or AMP connectors Gen1) at the electrical enclosure for a firm, sealed fit. These connections are waterproof, but loose pins or partial engagement can lead to intermittent connection issues.
5. Prime Cylinders Correctly After Service
If the system has been serviced, stored dry, or shows symptoms like cylinder creep or inconsistent movement, it may need to be re-primed.
This involves:
-
Cycling the cylinders with short strokes
-
Topping off fluid during priming
-
Bleeding air from both bore and rod sides
Refer to your Owner’s Manual for the full priming procedure.
6. Secure and Protect the Power Unit
The power unit should be mounted:
-
Level for proper fluid suction
-
In a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area (never in a bilge or near ignition sources)
Ensure that it remains free from salt buildup, grime, or excessive heat. Check that the system bypass valve is fully closed and that the jam nut is not interfering with its seating.
7. Use the System Regularly
Just like an engine or a bilge pump, your hydraulic outrigger system benefits from regular use. Cycling the system helps keep seals lubricated, prevents corrosion, and allows you to spot small issues before they become big problems.
8. Know Your Serial Numbers
Every hydraulic system ships with serialized labels on the electrical enclosure (power unit) and base of the outrigger.
Take note of these numbers and keep them handy—they’re essential for ordering parts, getting tech support, or scheduling service.
